Water Garden Sigiriya overlooks one of the Cultural Triangle’s key monuments – the ancient rock fortress of Sigiriya, one of eight World Heritage sites in Sri Lanka.
Water Garden Sigiriya
SRI LANKA
Its 30 free-standing villas (many with private pools) are vast and hugely indulgent, and all are arranged around a series of wildlife-rich lakes inspired by Sigiriya’s 2,000-year-old water gardens.
The hotel’s rural location feels well off the beaten track yet the ruined rock fortress of Sigiriya is within sight and a 20-minute drive away.
Rice paddies and mature trees surround the hotel’s substantial watery grounds, and the area teems with peacocks, cormorants and egrets.
Other notable sights within easy reach include the Dambulla Cave Temples – one of the island’s holiest Buddhist shrines – and Ritigala’s ancient forest monastery. Day trips to the ruined cities of Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura, and elephant safaris in Minneriya, Kaudulla or Wasgamuwa national parks (best from late July to October) are easily achievable.
We loved our time here, and as a family of 6 shared one of the duplex family villas- it was heavenly!
